How do the children come to use Hope House/Ty Gobaith?

Children can be referred by anyone, their families, GP, health visitor etc. All we ask is that they have the permission of the child’s parents or other person with parental responsibility. Their case will then be reviewed by our panel, and if they meet our criteria, they will be offered respite or the type of service that best meets their needs – i.e. home care/sibling support etc.

What kind of children do you support?

If the medical prognosis is that the child will not, in all  probability, live beyond early adulthood and they live in our catchment  area then they will meet our criteria.

Do our children ever get better?

In a small number of cases a child’s illness may not progress in the way it was first thought and they may survive. Many of the children we care for are living longer lives, thanks to advances in medicine.

What happens if they live beyond 19?

Each case is looked at individually and if the adolescent’s life expectancy is short then we will continue their care, however in other cases we work with local adult hospices and similar organisations in an attempt to provide on-going respite care.  In some circumstances it may be necessary for us to gradually withdraw our service if a child oriented environment is no longer appropriate for the young adult in question.

Where it is clear that a young person\'s health is deteriorating and it is felt that Hope House Children\'s Hospices is the most appropriate organisation to offer them care, we can continue to support the young person up to 25 years of age.

How much does it cost to run Hope House and Ty Gobaith?

We need to raise £3.5 million each year to maintain our two hospices, plus our outreach services. The cost of providing Social Work, Counselling and Community Nursing is around £500,000. The additional £500,000 is the cost of managing the service, and of raising the funds.

How much help do you get from the Government?

For the next 3 years we have been promised around £300,000 per year. This is very welcome, but in reality will only fund our work for about one month.

How do you raise all that money?

We raise money from a variety of sources, from schools and businesses to grant-making trusts and clubs and groups. The largest number of donations each month comes from members of the general public who believe in what we do and give what they can afford.

Do you have any celebrities supporting you?

A number of celebrities have helped us raise money over the years, including Sir Norman Wisdom, Ulrika Johnson and Suranne Jones (ex-Coronation Street). Our celebrity Patrons are Welsh opera singer Bryn Terfel and singer and presenter Aled Jones, who help us on a regular basis.
