Land's End to John O'Groats Challenge!
Tuesday 08 June 2010John Clayton's Lands End to John O'Groats Challenge
I am a member of Carneddau Tri Club and Rhos on Sea Cycle Club, Colwyn Bay and would class myself as one of the slower ones, always bringing up the rear and . We have risen close on £20K for Ty Gobaith - a children’s hospice in North Wales, by organising the Llanrwst Tri for the last 4 years.
My Cunning Plan
The inspirational and fantastic strength of character shown by our troops injured in battle in recent years got me thinking. I have decided to ride unsupported from Land's End to John O' Groats, between the two extremities; in the southwest and northeast. The distance by road is 874 miles (1,407 km) and takes most cyclists ten to fourteen days.
I plan to cycle it from the 3rd of September 2010 in 8-9 days (about 100 miles each day) to raise money for Ty Gobaith and Help the Heroes.
What do I hope to achieve
To raise as much money as I can prise from you generous people.
Where will your money go?
Every penny you give will go to either Ty Gobaith or Help for Heroes - whichever you chose or an even split if you do not specify.
Will I use your money to pay for any expenses?
Not a chance, I am paying for this trip without anything coming from donations. Should be great fun and I am doing it because many are not able to.
I will be travelling very light no panniers – just 1 change of clothes – staying in Travelodge / B&B etc and eating anything I can to fuel 6/7,000 calories a day, sounds great doesn’t it.
Why unsupported?
Sounds like a good idea so why not? It makes it easier and less of a burden on others. Since I have told friends and colleagues, quite a few want to join me for the whole or various parts of the ride. So if you are feeling up for a turn of the pedals then please join in.
A regular sponsor of the Llanrwst Tri has already pledged to help out so with luck other sponsors will come forward!

What will I do for you?
- Keep you updated of the progress and how much has been raised.
- Use your generosity as energy to spur me on when the saddle and legs get sore
- Give you a great big thank you!
What can I tell you about the charities – I will let them speak, here is a quote from them...
"When a parent is told their child will not live to be an adult it is the start of an agonising journey. A childhood terminal illness challenges every belief, emotion and dream a parent may have for their special son or daughter.
Hope House Children’s Hospices – Hope House in Oswestry and Ty Gobaith in Conwy – provide practical and emotional support to families facing the pain of losing their precious child.
It costs £3.5 million a year to run both hospices which rely almost entirely upon donations as well as many generous individuals who fundraise on our behalf by organising fantastic fundraising events across the regions."
