We pride ourselves on developing our volunteers.

Recently our Bangor store has seen great success for long-term volunteer Tom Kirkham.

Tom, who has clocked up 11 years of service, has secured paid employment four days a week at a city retail store and passed his probation for paid shifts with us.

The familiar face on Bangor High Street praised the positive effects of volunteering on his life, by saying: “I was signposted towards volunteering work through the Job Centre after leaving college.

“I came to visit, and the rest is history.

“I’ve learned a lot of valuable skills like cash handling, merchandising and customer service and it helped me in finding paid retail work.

“Volunteering here really gives me something to look forward to.

“You can always rely on colleagues to keep you positive.”

The 32-year-old from Menai Bridge shared: “I always do one day a week but sometimes help-out more when needed.

“There’s never a dull day in the Bangor shop.

“Plus, it’s a chance to have a good moider.

“I’m part of the furniture now and am happy to do whatever needs to be done that day.”

Our Commercial Manager Mark Hunt-Gittins said: “All our volunteers like Tom, are priceless.

“They help us manage the flow of stock, present the store beautifully and always give a friendly welcome to our amazing customers.

“The money we raise at the shop goes straight to the care of children with life-threatening conditions and is a cause we’re all very proud of.

“Volunteering is something I would urge more young people to consider. It looks great on your CV and is a brilliant way to learn employment skills and make friends.”

Tom has also picked up a keen eye for a great donation, he said: “I once spotted a dollhouse that came in as a donation and researched it.

“We managed to sell it at £300 for the charity.

“We have had a lot of Portmeirion Pottery too and some expensive dresses.”
