This study, undertaken by the University of York and funded by the NHS Wales National Palliative and End of Life Care Programme Board, provides for the first time detailed and robust data on the numbers and complexity of children and young people with life-limiting conditions in Wales.

Taken together with the lived experiences of children and families, it provides a sound and compelling basis for the future development of children's palliative and end of life care policy and services.

The data clearly shows that Wales is seeing a large increase in the population of babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and an increase in the complexity of their conditions.

We are calling on all parties and stakeholders with interest, responsibility, and influence in children's palliative care in Wales to work together to shape and deliver world-class, sustainable services to meet the needs of the 4,289 children and young people currently living with life-limiting conditions in Wales.
